Club News

It was another busy week with mixed weather conditions for the Swimming club. Racing started on Tuesday 30th July with the Youths swimming  a 1 Kilometre course, which seen Aine Cahill take first place, Amy O’Brien was second and David Cahill third. The senior race, for the Regatta cup was kindly sponsored by Forkin estates of Wicklow. This was a tough long swim of 1350 metres, with eighty eight swimmers. 1st Dessie brennan, 2nd Patrice Nolan, 3rd Denise O’Brien.

The “Black Castle” race was held on Friday 2nd August, this is a short race of about 850 metres, but it was windy and the tide made it hard to get around the end of the Lighthouse pier. Nevertheless, it was a great race to watch, with a very close finish for both the Men and the Ladies. James “Rocky” Newsome gave it everything to take first place and the “Cullen cup”, about 8 inches ahead of Ben Armstrong who got second and Gavin McInerney in third place. The Ladies race was very exciting as well, and ended in a battle between three of the fastest ladies in the club, Nora Dunne took first place and the “P.V Reilly” cup, just ahead of Joanna Hamilton in second and Rosin Hennessey in third. These races were Kindly sponsored by Threasa Sheeky and Gus Cullen, who presented the prizes in the Sailing club.

The Swimming club held its second “Open” swim of the year on Sunday 4th August. There was a very high entry in both races with 121 men and 86 ladies from clubs all over Leinster, swimming a2K course down the Murrough and finishing at the beach. Mens : 1st John McCarthy NAC Masters, 2ns Sam Hennessey Wicklow, 3rd Paul Reynolds St. Vincents, 4th Jimmy Seery North Dublin, 5th Robert Clarke eastern Bay, 6th Neil Murphy Dublin. Ladies : 1st Molly Molloy Dublin, 2nd Leslie Meehan Dublin, 3rd Michelle Dunne Dublin, 4th Maeve Dunne Dublin, 5th Lisa Howley Glenalbyn, 6th Mairead Keighery Wicklow.

Racing tonight Wednesday 7th August, 6.45pm Intermediates” Chairmans” cup, 7.15pm Senior “Irish Rubies” cup sponsored by the Leitrim. The “Club Vartry” is on Saturday 10th August at 2.15pm, sponsored by Fitzpatricks of rathnew. Sunday 11th August junior sprints 10.15am, intermediates 11am and Youths at 11.30am.

The” Senior Invitational Masters” is starting at the sailing club slip at 2.15pm. This race is open to everybody over the age of 25, all you have to do is turn up at least a half an hour before the race to register. The swim starts at the Sailing club slip and goes up the river (With the tide) and finishes at the Parnell Bridge (Walking bridge).
