Wicklow swimming Club results 19th June 2016
Wicklow Swimming club held its first Open Sea swim of the season, on Friday 17th June. This 1.5 kilometre race started at Travalhawk and finished at The Glen Strand and was made more challenging by choppy water conditions , but this didn’t deter two hundred and eleven swimmers from clubs throughout Leinster from competing in the ladies’ and men’s events. Men’s result;Ronan Markey – Sandycove ,2nd Padraig Cahill – Wicklow, 3rd David Wheelahan – Sandycove, 4th Liam O’Gradaigh – Aer Lingus Masters 5th Raymond Flanagan Tallaght Masters, 6th Gerry Cleary – Clontarf. Ladies’ result 1st Sandra O’Leary – NAC Masters 2nd Lia Furlong – Wexford Masters,3rd Brenda Smith – Eastern Bay 4th Oonagh Conway – Glenalbyn Masters,5th Debbie O’Connor Wicklow, 6th Paula Kristiansen -Wicklow. Wicklow Swimming Club also won the ladies’ team race.
Sunday morning 19th July had calm water conditions accompanied by a light drizzle and seen 172 swimmers of all ages compete in the races. The Juniors were first in the water with fifty two of them swimming in the Junior sprints; Under 6 Boys:1st Bill Guinan. Under 6 Girls:1st Ruth Connolly 2nd Sadbh Tyrell 3rd Grace Vigors. Under 8 Boys:1st Ted Hasler 2nd Patrick Traynor 3rd Ben Fry. Under 8 Girls:1st Sadbh Hartley 2nd Mei Wilson 3rd Aoibheann Hartley. Under 10 Boys:1st Jacob Fry 2nd Darragh Carey 3rd Joss Huilin. Under 10 Girls:1st Evie Vigors 2nd Amy Noble 3rd Grainne Molloy. Under 12 Boys:1st Mike Connolly. Under 12 Girls:1st Sophie Power 2nd Emma Waters 3rd Laura Griffin. Under 14 Boys: 1st Luigi Rea. Next up was the Junior Challenge and seen sisters Niamh and Emma Waters take first and second place with Evie Vigors in third place.
Seventeen Intermediates competed for the Humby Family/ Vartry Garage cup. Charlie Brennan put in a great swim to take first place, with Mattew Leonard in second and Molly Sweeney in third place. Fourteen Youths swam a course of 550 metres, Mia kristensen was first, followed by Ava Frazer in second and Emily Clarke in third place. The senior race for the Humby Family/ Vartry Garage cup, was a sealed handicap over a course of 750 metres. Hanna Blake put in a fastest time to take first place, just ahead of Scott Morton in second and followed closely by Emma O’Brien in third position.
Midweek races start this evening Wednesday 22nd June at 6.45pm Intermediate – Silver shop cup. 7.15pm Senior – Aura cup. Racing for Sunday 26th June starts at.15am Junior Sprints, 10.30am Junior Challenge, 11am Intermediate, 11am Youths- Sophisticuts cup, and 12 noon – senior race for the Town Council cup.
