One hundred and fifty two swimmers competed in Wicklow Swimming races on Sunday morning 21st June.
First up were the Junior sprints; Under 6 Girls: 1st Mei Wilson 2nd Tara O’Neill 3rd Ruth Connolly.
Under 8 Boys: 1st Andriy Kravachenko 2nd David Johnston 3rd Darragh Bouchier.
Under 8 Girls: 1st Niamh Waters 2nd Ruby Hasler 3rd Abby Copeland.
Under 10 Boys: 1st Brian Johnston 2nd Harri Armstong 3rd Mike Connolly.
Under 10 Girls: 1st Emma Waters 2nd Kelly O’Neill 3rd Saoirse Dolan.
Under 12 Boys: 1st Charlie Pierse 2nd Chris Bouchier.
Under 12 Girls: 1st Maya Gaynor 2nd Kirsty Dunne 3rd Laura Griffin.
The second Junior challenge of the year seen Kirsty Dunne take first place, with Bonnie Bell-King in second and Lauren Hassler in third.
Nineteen Intermediates swam for the Humby cup; 1st Mia Ryan, 2nd Mia Cowdrey, 3rd Ciaran Carey.
With the summer yet to appear, water temperatures remained low (14 degrees inside harbour and 12 outside) for the first swim out into the bay. Thirteen Youths swam 600 meters for the first new cup in the Youth section, sponsored by the Binnion Family; 1st Emma Kristensen, 2nd Emma Smith, 3rd Ben Griffin.
There was a big field of ninety six senior swimmers competing for the Humby Family/Vartry Garage cup. This race was a sealed handicap and a great spectacle to watch 1st David Smith, 2nd Peter McGloin, and 3rd Paula Kristensen.
Midweek races start this evening Wednesday 24th June at 6.45pm Intermediate – Silver shop cup. 7.15pm Senior – Aura cup. Racing for Sunday 28th June starts at.15am Junior Sprints, 10.30am Junior Challenge, 11am Intermediate, 11am youths, and 12 noon – senior race for the Town Council cup. Wicklow Swimming Club has its first Open Swim coming up on the 28th of June; Men’s at 14:15 and Women’s at 15:00.
